Follow the steps below to verify and/or configure the Network Settings For Win95/98:
*NOTE: If you connect to a network at work or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) with your computer, contact your network or ISP administrator before making any changes to your network settings. Any changes could adversely affect your computer's ability to access the network. Windows ME does NOT have all of the mentioned tabs.
- Click on START, select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
- Double-click on the NETWORK icon.
- In the Network window, select DIAL-UP ADAPTER from the list.
- Click on PROPERTIES.
- In the Dial-Up Adapter Properties window, click on the BINDINGS tab.
- Select the TCP/IP - DIAL-UP ADAPTER check box and click on OK.
- In the Network window, select TCP/IP -> DIAL-UP ADAPTER from the list.
- Click on PROPERTIES. ---(If you see a TCP/IP Information Box popup, just click OK.)
- In the TCP/IP Properties window, click on the IP ADDRESS tab.
- Select the option to OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY.
- Click on the DNS CONFIGURATION tab.
- Select the option to DISABLE DNS.
- Click on the WINS CONFIGURATION tab.
- Select the option to DISABLE WINS RESOLUTION.
- Click on OK.
- Click on OK.
- Click on YES to restart your computer for the new settings to take effect.
To manually put the CompuServe Classic DNS Numbers into the Control Panel follow these steps:
- Click START
- Click SETTINGS
- Click CONTROL
- Click NETWORK
- Double click TCP/IP or TCP/IP>DIAL UP ADAPTER
- Go to the DNS CONFIGURATION TAB
- Enable it
- For host type in CIS
- For DNS server search order, type in 149.174.211.5 and click ADD
- Then type in 149.174.213.5 then click ADD
- Click OK
- Click OK again
- It should ask to reboot the computer please do so.
*NOTE: It has been brought to my attention that the DNS numbers listed here are no longer valid. To get updated DNS numbers for compusevre. I suggest pinging gateway.compuserve.com and writeing down the IP address that is returned. Sorry, but if you don't know how to do a 'ping', I don't have the instructions on this site for doing it. Maybe I will add them later.
